“The Night of the Virgin”
Book discussion, reception and signing with author Elliott
Turner
When Manny
Hernandez turned eighteen, he left behind the desperately poor Rio Grande
Valley with one goal in mind: become a professional soccer player. He stumbled
a few times, but found plenty of adventure along the way as he and his best
friend Hector traveled across Texas and the West Coast. Still, what happened on
the field isn't even half the story. A pulsating and raw look at the
Mexican-American community's struggles with poverty, alcoholism, infidelity,
spirituality and prejudice. A thoughtful reflection on a brash young man who
grew into a loving father. An indisputably American tale where a dream lead to
a journey that twisted when you wanted it to turn.
Elliott lives in
Texas and his soccer journalism has been published at The Guardian, VICE
Sports, FourFourTwo, Howler Magazine, The Blizzard, Yahoo Sports, and countless
others.

(Star Reflexes: Stories that heal the
soul)
Book discussion, reception and signing with author Blanca
Dominguez

Meet the Award Winning Author

The ABCs to Ranching is a
cultural perspective on ranching in South Texas. It is a humorous account of a
mischievous young boy determined to help his father with the chores. “Let’s
go,” he yells to his Catahoula Cowdog as his father warns him not to get
underfoot. With one mishap after another, the young boy develops an
appreciation for nature and a strong connection to his father and their
heritage—all centered on the alphabet. The ABCs to Ranching is accompanied
by a music CD that is sure to get the children singing and dancing!
